Patient decision aids provide patients with information on treatment options, benefits, and risks. They are designed to improve conversations between patients and providers.
This toolkit is designed for clinical and administrative champions who are interested in integrating decision aids into routine care. It distills more than 15 years of experience implementing decision aids across the Mass General Brigham health system along with the experiences of 9 other practices that participated in an Orthopedic Shared Decision-Making Learning Collaborative.
We have identified 6 core elements, as shown in the figure, that are critical for successful implementation. The champions are at the center of the figure as they are critical to launching the project and integrating lessons learned from one element to the other elements. These steps can be approached in any order that works for your organization. The toolkit has tips, strategies, and resources to support champions with each element:
- Leadership Support
- Workflow Design
- EHR Integration
- Scale-Up Strategy
- Decision Aid Delivery
- Monitoring & Improving
