IMPACT SDM

Our study:

The purpose of the IMPACT SDM study is to improve the quality of treatment decisions for patients facing aortic valve replacement through implementing SDM interventions.

Why is this study important?

Shared decision making (SDM) is a multi-faceted process and is not consistently implemented in routine care for aortic stenosis. This project seeks to advance our understanding of the best implementation strategies to achieve SDM and thereby improve the quality of decisions about aortic valve replacement.

Participating sites:

  1. Massachusetts General Hospital (Coordinating center)
  2. University of California, San Francisco
  3. University of Colorado, Denver
  4. Emory University
  5. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
  6. University of Pennsylvania
  7. Washington University in St Louis
  8. University of Texas, Southwestern

Overview:

IMPACT SDM is a 5-year study with a goal to enroll 1,300 patients with 56 clinicians across all 8 sites. The study will use patient decision aids developed by the American College of Cardiology and evidence-based skills training for clinicians developed by the MGH team.

Enrollment Progress:

Study staff are actively screening and inviting eligible patients to enroll into the study. Our goal is to enroll 1300 patients across all our sites. To date we have enrolled 530 patients—we are 41% of the way to our goal!
